Frequently Asked Questions
-
What should I expect at my first visit?
During your first visit we will be discussing what is bringing you in for therapy, along with your background information (mental and physical health history, family history, employment, etc.). This initial consultation will last 60 minutes. At the end of our session we can determine if I am a good fit for you and your needs, identify your therapy goals, and schedule your next visit.
-
How long does each therapy session last?
Following your initial consultation, each therapy appointment is the standard 50 minutes in length.
-
How frequently will we meet?
This is a common question and the answer really depends on the individual and the progress we are making in our sessions. We will set goals during our initial consultation and will be working towards those goals in our meetings as well as your work outside of the visits. We will be checking in periodically to see if goals and expectations are being met. I find that typically meeting on a weekly basis to begin is best, and as we progress we can adjust frequency of visits.
-
What about privacy and confidentiality?
What we discuss in our sessions is private. This information is not disclosed unless you provide written permission to do so.
There are, however, exceptions to confidentiality. These exceptions include if we determine you may harm yourself or someone else; if there is abuse of a child, elderly individual, or person with a disability; or if a court subpoenas my records. If you have further questions about this, please don’t hesitate to discuss them with me. You can also find more details in the Informed Consent form that you will receive with your initial paperwork.
-
Should we meet in-person or via telehealth?
I currently offer telehealth visits throughout the week, and in-person visits on Fridays.
There are many factors to consider when deciding which is right for you. Do you have access to a private space and a device with an internet connection? Would you rather avoid commuting? Do you struggle with technology? We can discuss the appropriate mode of therapy in our initial consultation to make sure it is a good fit.
-
How should I prepare for telehealth visits?
Telehealth visits are both convenient and beneficial. All you need is access to a private space and a device with video/audio capabilities (this can be a computer, tablet, or smartphone) that can connect to the internet.
The video platform I use is called Simple Practice and it’s secure and very easy to use. You will receive email and text message reminders (if you choose to opt-in) and on the day of your appointment, you will receive a link to connect to our secure video session. Just click the link followed by “Join Video Call”.
If you will be using Blue Cross Blue Shield of AZ (BCBS) or Aetna insurance, they typically allow telehealth visits. However, it’s always best to call ahead to check your benefits coverage before beginning therapy.
-
How do I pay for my appointments?
You will be given access to a client portal where your credit card information will be stored. Your credit card will be charged on the day of service.
For in-person appointments, cash is also accepted.
-
I am a current client. How do I contact you in between sessions?
There are a few ways to reach me if needed in between sessions. You can reach me via secure messaging on the client portal with sensitive information. For non-sensitive information, you can text or send an email. I will do my best to respond within one business day (Monday - Friday, 10am to 7pm).
If this is a mental health emergency, please call 911, 988, 1-800-273-8255, or 602-222-9444; text 741741; or go to your local emergency room.
-
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
You can cancel existing appointments and request new appointments through the client portal. Appointments canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled time will be subject to a $50 late cancelation charge. Insurance does not cover cancelation and no-show charges.
-
Are you taking any COVID-19 precautions?
Telehealth visits are a great option for those who wish to continue practicing social distancing.
For those in-person visits, I have sanitizer available, seating is positioned to allow social distancing, and we can discuss the use of masks.
